NEST:community building bird habitiat

For the Summer of 2010 the community is welcome to join me, Sharon Kallis, in workshops to create woven sculptures for the CRAB Park marsh pond located in CRAB park, Vancouver. Forms made will serve as perches, protection and nesting locations for park birds and participants can learn about the plants and wildlife of CRAB Park while helping to make this small ecosystem more livable for birds in the DTES. Begun on Earth Day, April 22 with 3 woven orbs made from locally harvested Red Osier Dogwood. Workshops will continue both in the park and at various DTES community locations: basic weaving techniques will be taught using natural materials harvested from the park. The materials used include invasive Flag Iris, growing in the pond and native Red Osier Dogwood, a fast growing bush that requires ongoing trimming.  Together sculptural processes with the materials will be explored leading to the the final installations in the marsh and park. It is my hope as well, that the community and I can work together to weave a garden-bed protective edging for the woman’s memorial located in the park.
